Karachi, 28 December 2025: The opening day of the President’s Trophy 2025-26 saw Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL), Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Ghani Glass and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) put strong strides forward as the action unfolded at four venues in Karachi on Sunday.
SNGPL’s left-handed batters Shan Masood and Ali Zaryab punished Sahir Associates’ bowlers with a 390-run second-wicket stand at the NBP Sports Complex as they closed the day with 460-2 in 82.1 overs.
Shan struck his second first-class double century in 2025 as he remained 212 not out and will aim to go past 250 not out – his best first-class score – which he scored earlier in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2025-26. He smashed 18 fours and two sixes in a 185-ball unscathed outing.
Ali Zaryab registered his 10th first-class century but fell eight runs short of the double century as Mohammad Hasnain provided Sahir the much-needed breakthrough late in the day. Ali struck 27 fours and four sixes in his 237-ball knock.
Earlier, Ali and Azan Awais (26, 68b, 4x4s) had put on 53 runs opening the batting. Omair Bin Yousuf, who was unbeaten on five of 15 balls at stumps, will join Shan in the middle at the start of day two. Bilawal was the other wicket-taker for Sahir as they employed eight bowlers on a toiling day.
WAPDA’s Aqib Khan wreaked havoc with the ball as his six for 18 in 11.4 overs including three maidens bundled out Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) for a mere 116 in 46.4 overs at the National Bank Stadium. Naqeebullah and Mohammad Zeeshan picked up two wickets each.
For KRL, only Saad Baig (22, 30b, 3x4s) and Junaid Ali (21, 64b) managed to cross the 20-run mark as wickets tumbled at regular intervals. Saad and Shahzaib Khan’s (14, 54b, 1x4) 34-run opening stand of 34 was the highest partnership for KRL.
In turn, WAPDA were 75-4 in 23.1 overs at close of play with Arshad Iqbal and Mohammad Hamza picking up two wickets each. WAPDA will begin day two 41 runs behind KRL and with Sharoon Siraj at the crease unbeaten on 37 off 60 balls including five fours.
At the UBL Sports Complex, Ghani Glass were 67-2 in 24 overs at stumps in reply to Oil and Gas Development Company Limited’s (OGDCL) 196 all out in 60 overs.
After Sharjeel Khan (38 not out, 75b, 6x4s) and Khawaja Arham (16, 54b, 2x4s) put on 46 runs in their opening stand, OGDCL’s Danish Aziz struck twice including the scalp of night watcher Ubaid Shah, who fell for a two-ball duck.
Earlier, four wickets each for skipper Noman Ali and Afaq Afridi helped Ghani Glass restrict OGDCL under the 200-run mark. They slipped to 100-7 before no.9 batter Mushtaq Ahmed blazed aa 77-ball 58 including five fours and three sixes to take his team to a competitive score. Mushtaq stitched a 76-run stand with Abdul Rehman Muzammil (16, 83b) for the eighth wicket.
SBP were 106-4 in 41 overs at stumps and seven runs ahead of Pakistan Television (PTV) at the State Bank Stadium. Opening batter Hasan Raza was unbeaten on 39 off 132 balls hitting three fours, while Mohammad Abbas was sent in to night watch at 101-4 after Muhammad Ghazi Ghori’s (22, 37b, 3x4s) departure with Rameez Aziz and Qasim Akram being the batters yet to come.
Earlier, PTV were skittled for a mere 99 in 30.4 overs with only Mohammad Taha (47, 65b, 6x4s, 1x6) and Waqar Hussain (12, 39b, 2x4s) entering double figures. SBP’s pacers Mohammad Ismail (6-1-27-5) and Kashif Ali (9.4-2-19-4) shared nine wickets among them.
