Veteran statistician Ben Lawrence passes away

Lahore, 13 August 2020: Veteran statistician and scorer Bernard Lawrence passed away on 13 August at the age of 81. He is considered as one of the pioneers of cricket scoring and statistics in Pakistan and was a regular figure in the commentary boxes in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

A soft-spoken, smiling and humble person, Ben also made notable contributions for the foreign media outlets by providing them scorecards and statistics, thus, ensuring Pakistan cricketers were duly recognised and acknowledged.

“Ben Lawrence was one of the unsung heroes of Pakistan cricket. At a time when Pakistan cricket was moving from traditional to new media, Ben played a critical role to provide statistics and data to the television and radio commentators and covering journalists, which enhanced the quality of cricket coverage.

“With his dedication, commitment and hard work, Ben became a popular figure in the media working areas during domestic and international matches as well as a role model for a number of present day statisticians and scorers.

“The PCB offers its deepest condolences to Ben’s family and friends, and will always remember him as someone who genuinely loved cricket and served Pakistan cricket with honour and pride.”
