Sussex, 30 July 2025: Left-handed opening batter Azan Awais was dismissed for 98 as Pakistan Shaheens were bowled out for 243 on the second day of the first three-day match against the Professional County Club Select XI at the 1st Central County Ground, Hove on Wednesday.
At stumps, the hosts were 288 for four, taking a first-innings lead of 45 runs.
Resuming their first innings at the overnight score of 185 for four, Shaheens lost Azan with the total on 191. His innings of 98 off 170 balls featured 15 fours and a six. After his departure, wicketkeeper-batter Rohail Nazir contributed 22 from 48 deliveries, including four boundaries. The tourists were dismissed in the 70th over, with captain Saud Shakeel (15, 29b, 2x4s) not batting after being struck on the hand on day one.
For the Professional County Club Select XI, Nathan Gilchrist claimed three wickets, while Alex Green and Jafer Ali Chohan clinched two wickets apiece.
In turn, Professional County Club Select XI were in trouble losing three wickets for 33 runs on the board, with Mushtaq Ahmed taking two wickets and Mir Hamza one for Shaheens.
Rocky Flintoff (39 off 58 balls, 4x4s, 1x6) added 74 runs for the fourth wicket with captain Luc Benkenstein before being dismissed by left-arm spinner Mehran Mumtaz with the total on 107.
At that stage, with the hosts still trailing by 136, Benkenstein was joined by Ben Mayes and the pair added an unbroken 181-run stand for the fifth wicket, guiding their side to a lead of 45 runs with six wickets still in hand.
Right-hander Benkenstein remained unbeaten on 154 from 201 deliveries, striking 26 fours and a six. Mayes was not out on 66 off 99 balls, which included eight fours and a six.
For Shaheens, right-arm fast Mushtaq returned figures of two for 68 from 15 overs, while Mehran Mumtaz and Mir Hamza took one wicket each.
