Sussex, 29 July 2025: Pakistan Shaheens on the back of an unbeaten 94 by Azan Awais, ended day one of three on 185 for four against Professional County Club Select XI at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove on Tuesday. Only 55.2 overs of play were possible on the first day, with just 14 deliveries bowled in the final session due to persistent rain before stumps were drawn.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rohail Nazir returned undefeated on seven off 14 balls, including one four.
Left-handed batter Azan, who was also the leading run-scorer in the recently concluded three-match one-day series continued his fine form. His 159-ball innings featured 14 fours and one six.
Earlier, after being asked to bat, Shamyl Hussain (42, 85b, 8x4, 1x6) and Azan shared a 78-run opening stand. The pair had also added 101 runs for the first wicket in the third one-day match on Sunday at the same venue.
Following Shamyl’s dismissal, Mohammad Suleman (7 off 25) was the next to fall. Captain Saud Shakeel (15, 29b, 2x4s) was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the hand by a delivery from Nathan Gilchrist. Right-handed batter Haider Ali, who had scored two half-centuries in the one-day series was dismissed without scoring.
Shortly before tea, Shaheens lost right-hander Mubasir Khan for 13 off 17 balls, which included two boundaries.
For the Professional County Club Select XI, Gilchrist was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of two for 43 from 15 overs.
